Why I Hate The Term LGBT

Standard

I love…

I love the lesbians. I love the gays. I love the bisexuals. I love the transgender. I love the straights too. But that’s the thing I hate about this statement. I love the movement. I hate the labels.

Sure it gives us all a sense of identity, but a social connotation that comes to mind with the term LGBT is “different.” One day, I want to come home to my daughter…wait I don’t have kids…but I want to come home to my imaginary daughter and if they say to me, “Mama!”

(Yes I want to be called Mama :P)

Anyways, if they call “MAMA!” to me…I want the conversation to go like this:

Me being a mama: “Yes dear?”

My daughter: “I love this girl at school!!”

Me being a Mama: “That’s great dear! What’s she like?”

The Reality

If you reverse this situation and she said that she likes a boy, you wouldn’t say, “Oh…so you’re straight” to your daughter or son if they said they’ve fallen for a member of the opposite sex, but right now, if you’re gay, that conversation would’ve ended up, “Oh…so you’re a lesbian…” and then all the complications that follow.

Not all conversations go this way, of course. There are those who share my views and find that at the end of the day, love is just love. Because really, it’s just love. Love is amazing, why should people deprive others of it just because they’re “different”?

It’s just a frustrating thing to hear when people are being punished for loving the same sex. I mean…I remember going through a period when dating my boyfriend was a problem for my parents. I just can’t imagine what you guys have to go through.

Progress?

I love the progress we’re getting with same-sex marriages in parts of the world and there is still much to be done, but I just hope I’m still alive for the day that being gay or transgender is normalized and that there are no labels for it.

I just hope in the future that we can focus on actual real problems (like…how we can sustain all these people on Earth?) because being LGBT shouldn’t even a problem in the first place.

I don’t know…I just never viewed it as a weird thing growing up. I might even be bisexual because I find myself checking girls out too, but that’s a different story for another day. 😛

Social Love

Even franchise chains like Burger King is getting in on the whole LGBT movement with their “Proud Whopper,” which is the EXACT same thing as a Whopper because according to the inside of the burger wrapping, “We are all the same inside.”

This may be a good thing or a bad thing…depends how you look at the glass, but personally, I’m happy this happened because they didn’t change a thing. They could’ve added something or taken away something…that would surely cause a social media storm because why not right?

Kicking The Habit

One habit that I’ve improved on greatly though is that I’ve stopped using the phrase, “That’s gay.” I picked up that very bad habit when I was younger and even though I was never a hater of the LGBT community, I didn’t realize how negative that phrase was. Luckily, I smartened up. 😉

Anyways, as you all know World Pride just passed this last weekend and I always say I’m going to go, but my trip to Montreal delayed that for another year. Seriously though…next year, I WILL CELEBRATE WITH ALL OF YOU!

Cheers! and HAPPY FRIDAY<3
